Gold prices have recently reached a six-month high following a drop earlier in 2022. Tragically, a rescue operation for 13 workers trapped in a collapsed gold mine in Russia’s Far East was called off as authorities declared them dead. The miners had been trapped at a depth of around 400 feet after the mine collapsed in the Zeysk district of the Amur region. Efforts to rescue them were impeded by flooding in the mine. The mine remains flooded, with the risk of further collapses, leading to the termination of the rescue operation. The company operating the mine, one of Russia’s largest, has announced compensation for the victims’ families. The cause of the accident has not been determined, but many past mining accidents have been linked to safety violations. This incident is one of several recent mining tragedies globally, including collapses in Venezuela and Mali.
