About 50 people have died in Angola after being forced to drink a herbal potion to prove they were not sorcerers. The deaths occurred near the town of Camacupa between January and February. Local councilor Luzia Filemone accused traditional healers of giving the deadly concoction. Belief in witchcraft remains common in some rural Angolan communities. Police warned that cases like this were increasing, with allegations of sorcery often settled by ingesting a deadly herbal drink called “Mbulungo.” Bishop Firmino David highlighted that socio-economic challenges were pushing some towards witchcraft. Angola lacks laws against witchcraft, leaving communities to address the issue independently.
