A Nigerian woman, Chioma Okoli, is facing imprisonment and a civil lawsuit after posting a critical online review of a can of tomato puree, produced by Erisco Foods Limited. The manufacturer accused her of damaging its business with a “malicious allegation.” Okoli, a small-scale entrepreneur, asked for opinions on Facebook, to which she criticized the product for being too sweet. Subsequently, she was arrested for allegedly instigating against the company and could face up to three years in jail if found guilty. Okoli’s legal team is challenging her arrest, citing violations of her rights. The case has sparked protests and calls for boycotting Erisco’s products, while Amnesty International Nigeria is supporting Okoli’s legal fees.
