A Moscow court has ordered Russian journalist Antonina Favorskaya to remain in custody pending an investigation and trial on charges of extremism. Favorskaya, who covered the trials of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny and others, was arrested in March and must stay in pre-trial detention until at least May 28. The hearing was held behind closed doors, with Favorskaya objecting to the lack of transparency. She is accused of involvement with an extremist group for her work with Navalny’s Foundation for Fighting Corruption, deemed extremist by Russian authorities. Favorskaya denies publishing any content for the Foundation and suggests she is being targeted for her journalism. Navalny’s death earlier this year heightened crackdowns on dissent in Russia, with Favorskaya being one of several journalists detained recently as part of this broader suppression of opposition figures and activists.
