Mice brought to a remote island near Antarctica 200 years ago are now breeding uncontrollably due to climate change, posing a significant threat to the local biodiversity. Conservationists are planning a large-scale extermination operation using helicopters and rodent poison across the entire island. The project aims to protect the island’s unique ecosystem and prevent the extinction of seabird species. If successful, it would be the largest eradication of its kind. The operation, involving up to 550 tons of bait, is a collaborative effort between BirdLife South Africa and the national Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment.
