Somali security forces successfully neutralized all five attackers who besieged a hotel in Mogadishu, a typically secure area. Three soldiers lost their lives and 27 people sustained injuries during the assault. The extremist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, which targeted the SYL Hotel near the presidential palace. The situation has since stabilized, with the hotel secure and residents returning. Recent security enhancements had reduced attacks in the city, with the last major incident being twin car bombings in October 2022. Somalia’s government is actively combating al-Shabab, deemed a major threat by the U.S., with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declaring a “total war” against the group.
