Apple has made a significant move in its AI strategy by acquiring Canadian startup DarwinAI. This purchase, just ahead of the launch of iOS 18, marks Apple’s entry into generative AI. DarwinAI’s technology is capable of inspecting components during manufacturing and making AI systems smaller and faster, aligning with Apple’s focus on on-device AI processing. The acquisition includes key staff, such as AI researcher Alexander Wong, who will lead Apple’s AI Group. This step is seen as positioning Apple to compete with tech rivals like Google and Microsoft in the AI space. iOS 18 is expected to introduce new AI features, including enhancements to Siri and app functionalities, reflecting Apple’s emphasis on AI development. The company’s CEO expressed intentions to advance AI capabilities in 2024. Additionally, Apple’s commitment to privacy suggests that stringent user controls will accompany the AI features in iOS 18.
