Biden to host Japan PM Kishida, Philippines President Marcos for White House summit

President Joe Biden will be hosting a summit at the White House next month with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The leaders will discuss various issues, including concerns about North Korea’s nuclear program, Chinese actions in the South China Sea, and disagreements over a Japanese company’s attempt to purchase an American steel company. The summit is a chance to highlight economic relations, democratic values, and vision for a free Indo-Pacific region. Tensions have risen following North Korea’s missile tests and clashes between Chinese and Philippine vessels in the South China Sea. The U.S. has expressed opposition to the sale of an American steel company to a Japanese firm and will also engage in discussions about enhancing cooperation on various fronts during the upcoming summit.
