Tourists in Italy have been treated to a remarkable sight as Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, has been sending out impressive “smoke rings” into the sky due to a rare phenomenon known as “volcanic vortex rings.” The rings are being produced by a combination of rapid gas release and the shape of the vent from a new crater that opened last week on the volcano’s summit. This activity has been ongoing and has already emitted hundreds, if not thousands, of these stunning rings. Despite the spectacle, there have been no major disruptions reported in the surrounding areas or at Catania airport as a result of these unique volcanic emissions.
