Gang violence has struck Haiti, with armed gangs causing havoc in affluent neighborhoods, resulting in numerous deaths. The violence has been ongoing since the end of February, leading to a grim situation in the capital, Port-au-Prince. Recent attacks have raised concerns about the persistence of gang violence, despite Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s pledge to resign once a transitional council is formed. The situation is further complicated by a power company reporting the destruction of substations and the theft of crucial equipment, leaving parts of the capital without electricity. Efforts are being made by Caribbean leaders to establish a transitional council to address the crisis, although there have been obstacles in finalizing its composition. Additionally, the deployment of a UN-backed police force from Kenya to combat the gangs has been postponed. In an attempt to combat the escalating violence, Haiti has extended a nighttime curfew through to 20 March.
