Over 200 people have been sentenced in a mafia trial in Italy. Europol has released a report highlighting the infiltration of legal businesses by criminal networks in the European Union, with 821 networks and 25,000 members identified. These networks use corruption to hide their criminal activities and launder profits, with a focus on drug trafficking and money laundering. Europol cited examples of criminal activities, including drug trafficking hidden in banana shipments. The report emphasizes the involvement of the ‘Ndrangheta organized crime syndicate from Italy and the borderless nature of these criminal networks. Drug trafficking, corruption, and violence are major concerns for EU officials, with a need for better cooperation among law enforcement agencies to combat organized crime.
