The Lullaby Trust has issued a warning about the increased risk of suffocation or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) due to parents allowing babies to sleep in bouncers, swings, and beanbags. 70% of surveyed parents allowed their baby to sleep in a bouncer, with some even leaving them overnight. These devices can cause a baby’s head to flop forward, restricting airways. The charity advises placing babies on their back on a clear, flat, firm surface such as a cot or Moses basket while sleeping. It also recommends no loose bedding and ensuring the baby’s face is clear. Jenny Ward, CEO of The Lullaby Trust, states that these devices are useful when awake but not for sleep. According to the trust, SIDS affects around three babies per week every year, mostly in their first six months of life.
