Admiral John Aquilino of the Indo-Pacific Command predicts that China’s military could be ready to invade Taiwan by 2027, aligning with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s alleged objective to reunite Taiwan with the mainland. Aquilino reported that the People’s Liberation Army has significantly bolstered its military capabilities since 2020. However, there are differing views on whether China truly intends to go to war over Taiwan. Taiwan’s foreign minister and some experts echo concerns about a potential invasion by 2027. The U.S. and its allies have been monitoring the situation closely, with President Joe Biden indicating that the U.S. would defend Taiwan if attacked, though not supporting independence for the island. Relations between China, the U.S., and Taiwan have been strained in recent years.
