Colombia has ordered the expulsion of Argentine diplomats following Argentine President Javier Milei’s comments labelling Colombian President Gustavo Petro as a “terrorist” and a “murderer.” The Colombian foreign ministry stated that Milei’s remarks had eroded trust between the nations and disrespected the democratically-elected President Petro. Details on the number of diplomats being expelled were not disclosed, but Colombia will communicate the decision through diplomatic channels. Milei made the remarks in an unaired CNN interview, also stating that Petro is a “Communist.” Colombian-Argentinian relations have been strained before when Milei previously insulted President Petro, affecting the historical ties between the two countries. President Petro is Colombia’s first leftist president and a former member of the demobilized M-19 guerrilla movement.
