Denmark will become the third European country to conscript women for military service starting in 2026. This decision was made to address defense shortcomings amid heightened regional tensions due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Women can already volunteer for military service in Denmark, and last year, about a quarter of those serving were female. Additionally, Denmark announced an increase in military spending from 1.4% to 2% of GDP to meet NATO targets by next year. Conscripts, both male and female, will serve for 11 months, an increase from the current four months.
