EU leaders have responded to the Kremlin’s assertion that Russia is in “a state of war,” with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen criticizing Russia for betraying its own population by denying its state of war for the past two years. European Council President Charles Michel emphasized the need for the EU to bolster its defense industries in light of Russia’s statement. Additionally, Spain, Ireland, Malta, and Slovenia have agreed to work towards recognizing a Palestinian state, echoing a call for a cease-fire, hostage release, and increased humanitarian aid in Gaza. The EU has imposed sanctions on individuals linked to the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and is proposing tariffs on Russian and Belarusian grain imports. Discussions at the EU summit are expected to focus on foreign policy, agriculture, and the European Economic Area, with a particular emphasis on Ukraine, Gaza, and strengthening defense capabilities.
