European lawmakers approved comprehensive legislation on artificial intelligence, establishing strict rules for AI developers and usage. The law includes bans on certain AI applications, transparency requirements, and mandates risk assessments for high-risk AI systems. It is expected to gradually take effect over the next few years. The legislation aims to ensure safe and human-centric AI development. While awaiting final approval from EU member states, the law is seen to have a global impact as companies are unlikely to forgo access to the EU market. Other jurisdictions may use this law as a model for their AI regulations. The new rules will enforce bans on specific AI applications and require technical documentation and risk assessments for AI models. AI companies will be subject to fines of up to 7% of their global revenue for non-compliance.
