The European Parliament’s legal affairs committee has backed suing the European Commission over unfreezing 10 billion euros for Hungary. Lawmakers accuse the commission of giving in to pressure from Hungarian Prime Minister Orban, who they believe has not met rule-of-law standards. This move aims to reprimand Commission chief von der Leyen. The commission’s decision to release the funds sparked criticism in the parliament, with concerns about Hungary’s judicial independence and adherence to EU democratic standards. Another 21 billion euros of EU funds earmarked for Hungary remain frozen until issues like corruption and LGBTQ rights are addressed.
