The European Union has announced a €7.4 billion aid package for Egypt to assist in efforts to manage migration. The aid consists of grants and loans over the next three years and aims to strengthen Egypt’s borders, particularly with Libya, to address the movement of migrants from Africa and the Middle East. The EU intends to support Egypt in hosting Sudanese refugees as well. The deal has raised concerns among international rights groups regarding Egypt’s human rights record, with Amnesty International urging EU leaders to ensure clear human rights benchmarks are adopted by Egyptian authorities.
