France’s Senate has rejected a free-trade agreement between the EU and Canada, despite being provisionally in force since 2017. The agreement, known as CETA, requires ratification by all EU member countries for full effect. The Senate’s vote of 211 against and 44 for the treaty creates a setback for President Emmanuel Macron’s government, which supports the deal. The rejection does not nullify the agreement unless officially notified by the government. France is the second country to reject ratification, with Cyprus continuing to apply the treaty pending a new vote.
