Anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders has chosen to step back from his bid to become the prime minister of the Netherlands, despite his party winning the most seats in the election. This decision comes as he couldn’t secure full support from the parties he was negotiating with to form a ruling coalition. An official overseeing the talks has proposed a “program Cabinet” consisting of representatives from four parties and external experts. Wilders expressed disappointment at the outcome, noting his sacrifice for a right-wing government to push forward his agenda. His party, known for its anti-immigration stance, won 37 seats in the parliament. Despite initially being in a position to lead, Wilders decided to prioritize the formation of a right-wing coalition. The proposed technocratic government has faced criticism, but the parties involved may proceed based on a report by the mediator Kim Putters. The final decision on the coalition will be decided following a parliamentary debate.
