Germany has legalized the possession of small amounts of cannabis for recreational use, allowing adults to have up to 25 grams of marijuana and grow up to three plants. Public consumption events were held across the country to mark the new law taking effect. The government hopes this move will combat illegal drug trade, ensure product safety, and allow law enforcement to focus on more serious crimes. The legislation also establishes nonprofit “cannabis clubs” and includes an amnesty for previous cannabis-related offenses. Despite opposition from medical professionals and police, the law was passed by a coalition government, and the possibility of its reversal exists depending on future elections.
