The UN has described the situation in Haiti as “cataclysmic,” with over 1,500 people killed by gang violence this year. Corruption, poor governance, and a surge in gang violence have pushed Haiti to the brink of collapse. Gangs have intensified their attacks since late February, demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation. The report highlighted rampant sexual violence, recruitment and abuse of children by gangs, and the rise of “self-defence brigades” taking justice into their own hands. Despite an arms embargo, weapons continue to flow into the country, fueling the violence. The UN called for tighter controls on arms trafficking and urgent deployment of a Multinational Security Support mission to assist Haiti’s police. The report stressed the need to address corruption and dysfunction in the justice system to restore the rule of law in Haiti.
