Haiti’s political future is currently being shaped by two main forces - traditional political power and the influence of gangs. Following diplomatic talks in Jamaica, a group consisting of Caribbean nations and the United States has proposed a plan for stabilizing Haiti, which involves establishing a council of influential figures to select an interim leader and guide the country towards new presidential elections. Meanwhile, a prominent gang leader in Haiti has rejected any solution backed by the international community, emphasizing that the Haitian people should have the final say in their governance. The proposed transitional council would include representatives from political parties, civil society groups, and the private sector. However, some experts believe that the council’s composition may not adequately represent the wider Haitian society. The ongoing political situation in Haiti has also raised concerns about the extent of foreign involvement in shaping the country’s future, with some arguing that a more active role from international actors may be necessary to restore order amidst domestic instability.
