A Hong Kong court has sentenced 12 individuals to prison for storming the city’s legislative council building during the 2019 anti-government protests. The defendants, including former student leader Althea Suen and actor Gregory Wong, were convicted of rioting and other related charges. Sentences ranged from 4 1/2 years to 6 years and 10 months, based on their level of involvement. Supporters of the defendants were emotional as the sentences were handed down. Some defendants expressed entering the legislature to prevent injuries. Two reporters involved in the incident were acquitted of rioting but convicted for unlawful entry. The case reflects the ongoing crackdown on pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong since the imposition of a national security law in 2021.
