A volcano erupted in southern Iceland with little warning on Saturday night, marking the most powerful eruption in a series that began in December. Lava fountains and a two-mile fissure emerged on the Reykjanes Peninsula, near Grindavik, the Svartsengi Power Plant, and the Blue Lagoon tourist site. Emergency measures were taken, evacuating the area as the lava threatened local infrastructure. This eruption, one of seven in the region since 2021, poses a risk to the power plant and could lead to lava flowing into the North Atlantic, potentially causing explosions and hazardous gases.
