A Portuguese political party called Chega has gained significant influence following recent national elections that didn’t secure a clear victory for the two main parties. The party aims to challenge the established political order and combat corruption. The elections were colored by prior corruption scandals within the ruling Socialist Party, under Antonio Costa, leading to his resignation in 2023. Chega’s leader, André Ventura, a far-right figure, has emerged as a key player despite the party’s previous obscurity. With Chega winning 48 seats in the parliament, it could potentially form a coalition government with the center-right Democratic Alliance, although the Alliance’s leader has so far rejected this possibility. Portugal faces uncertainty as political dynamics shift, and negotiations among parties are expected to determine the country’s future direction.
