India has conducted a successful test flight of a new domestically developed missile capable of carrying multiple warheads, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The missile is equipped with multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles and is part of India’s ongoing development of medium and long-range missile systems, particularly in response to strategic competition with China. This test follows the successful 2021 test of the Agni-5 intercontinental ballistic missile, which has a range of 5,000 kilometers and can target a significant portion of China. Additionally, India maintains the capability to strike neighboring Pakistan, with which it has a history of conflict since gaining independence in 1947.
