Indian opposition parties came together in protest against the arrest of Delhi’s chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal, just weeks before the national election. They accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party of election manipulation and imposing hefty tax burdens on them. The opposition, led by Rahul Gandhi of the Congress party, expressed concerns about the fairness of the upcoming election. Kejriwal’s arrest, reportedly over corruption charges related to liquor licences, has been denounced by his Aam Aadmi party as a politically motivated move. Modi and the BJP government deny any interference, asserting that law enforcement is simply doing its job. The opposition rally highlighted fears of constitutional changes and a threat to democracy if Modi’s party secures victory. Modi defended his anti-corruption efforts and framed the election as a battle against corruption. The Congress party also raised issues of financial constraints due to government tax demands and frozen bank accounts, accusing the ruling party of unfair tactics to weaken them politically.
