Israeli military officials have reportedly been using artificial intelligence to identify bombing targets in Gaza, with an AI tool named “Lavender” having a 10% error rate. While the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed the tool’s existence, they denied using AI to identify suspected terrorists. However, there are claims that human review of target suggestions was minimal. The investigation also revealed that the Israeli army targeted homes where families were present, leading to civilian casualties. The IDF states that strikes are not conducted if the collateral damage is excessive compared to the military advantage and that efforts are made to minimize harm to civilians. Israeli officials argue heavy munitions are necessary to combat Hamas, the militant group in Gaza.
