Officials in Bologna, Italy, are concerned about the possible collapse of the Torre Garisenda, a historic leaning tower. The tower, located next to the larger Asinelli Tower, is at high risk of falling and has been closed to the public for safety reasons. City officials have initiated a $20 million project to stabilize the tower using equipment similar to that used on the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The plan involves running supports across the tower’s mid-section connected to pulley systems anchored in the ground. Further restoration work is expected in 2025 and 2026. The towers, built in the Middle Ages, served military and prestige purposes.
