New images captured by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope on January 5-6, 2024, have revealed dynamic weather patterns and significant storms on Jupiter, such as the well-known Great Red Spot and Red Spot Jr. These observations are part of the annual Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy program, which also showcased volcanic activity and surface features on Jupiter’s moon, Io. The images depict a planet with ever-changing stormy weather, including cyclones, anticyclones, wind shear, and the massive Great Red Spot, the largest storm in the solar system. Jupiter’s atmosphere, covered with colorful clouds, exhibits varied patterns caused by air movements at different latitudes. Hubble’s detailed tracking of these changes provides new insights into Jupiter’s atmospheric activity every year.
