Thailand’s lower house of Parliament has passed a marriage equality bill with overwhelming support, making it the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize equal rights for marriage partners of any gender. The bill, which now moves to the Senate and then to the king for royal approval, aims to provide full legal, financial, and medical rights to LGBTQ+ couples. Despite this progress, there are concerns that the exclusion of the term “parent” alongside “father and mother” in the law may impact the parental rights of LGBTQ+ couples. The government has emphasized that the amendment is about returning fundamental rights to all individuals in Thailand, regardless of gender.
