A delegation from Rome visited Beirut amidst ongoing conflict in south Lebanon. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati mistook an aide to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for Meloni herself when they arrived. Mikati greeted the aide, Patrizia Scurti, with kisses, realizing his mistake when Meloni descended from the plane. Meloni’s visit aimed to address the border conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, with a focus on de-escalation. The tensions in south Lebanon have sparked concerns of a broader conflict with Israel, especially as Hezbollah supports Hamas in Gaza. Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and border agreements are ongoing, with Israeli demands for Hezbollah to move its fighters north of the Litani River being a key point of contention.
