The United States has dropped out of the top 20 happiest countries in the world for the first time since the World Happiness Report began in 2012. The decline in ranking is mainly due to the unhappiness of Americans under 30 years old. The 2024 report, led by Finland for the seventh consecutive year, underlined a concerning trend of decreasing happiness among American youth. While the US has never been in the top 10 happiest countries, this is the first time age groups were analyzed separately. The survey found that Americans over 60 ranked 10th in happiness, whereas those under 30 placed 62nd.
