Conservationists are planning a mass extermination of invasive mice threatening the biodiversity of Marion Island, South Africa. These rodents, brought to the island 200 years ago, have been breeding rapidly and preying on adult seabirds and their chicks, endangering the ecosystem. A large-scale conservation plan involving the spread of rodent poison is set to be implemented to protect the island’s native species. If successful, this initiative could prevent the extinction of 19 seabird species over the next century.
