The International Federation of the Red Cross has issued a warning that Mongolia is facing its harshest winter in 50 years, known as dzud, with extreme conditions leading to the deaths of over 4.7 million animals. This crisis is threatening the livelihoods of thousands of people, particularly nomadic herders who heavily rely on their livestock for food and income. The severe winter has resulted in 2,250 herder families losing a significant portion of their livestock and over 7,000 families lacking access to sufficient food. The Mongolian government has declared a state of readiness, and relief efforts are underway to support those affected. The dzud is exacerbated by climate change, with Mongolia experiencing more frequent extreme weather events.
