President Mahmoud Abbas has established a new interim government amidst mounting pressure for a reformed Palestinian Authority (PA). The Cabinet, announced in a presidential decree, includes Mohammad Mustafa as prime minister, an independent economist aiming to create a technocratic government and an independent fund for Gaza’s reconstruction. The PA, dominated by Abbas’s Fatah party, has struggled with legitimacy due to the lack of elections in 18 years and perceived cooperation with Israel. The new government aims to address issues like Gaza’s ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal. However, Hamas rejects the new government’s validity and calls for a unified Palestinian leadership.
