Amid the ongoing war in Gaza, Palestinian Christians are facing unprecedented restrictions in accessing Jerusalem’s Old City to celebrate Easter. While some leaders have been granted permits, their congregations are not allowed to participate in services. The usual international worshipper crowds are absent due to the conflict, leaving Palestinian Christians eager but unable to visit their places of worship. The situation is described as very difficult and dark days, with heightened restrictions preventing access to important religious sites. There are reports of profiling and violence by security forces, making the environment uncomfortable. Even before the war, Palestinian Christians had to request permission well in advance to visit the Old City, with last year seeing criticism of heavy restrictions by the Greek Orthodox Church. Israeli policies are believed to be pushing Palestinians out of their homeland, exacerbating the challenges faced by worshippers during this time.
