In 1914, the US Marines seized $500,000 of gold from Haiti’s central bank, setting off a chain of events that led to a brutal 19-year US occupation. Since then, Haiti has faced ongoing political turmoil, foreign interference, and economic exploitation, contributing to its current status as the poorest nation in the Americas. Despite once symbolizing freedom and independence, Haiti now struggles with corruption, inequality, and a disconnect between its ruling elites and the marginalized population.
