The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has stated that there are reasonable grounds to believe that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. This comes after the submission of her report to the UN Human Rights Council. Albanese mentioned three acts of genocide with a requisite intent by Israel, which included killings, causing harm, and deliberately inflicting conditions leading to the group’s destruction. Israel has strongly rejected the report, calling it a distortion and bringing shame to the Human Rights Council. The report highlighted systematic slaughter of Palestinian civilians and the deployment of unlawful weapons by Israel, leading to dire consequences for the Palestinian population. Israel’s stance is that they are targeting Hamas, not civilians, in their military operations.
