A landslide in Russia’s Amur region trapped 13 miners more than 120 meters underground in a gold mine. After two weeks, the rescue operation was halted by Russian emergency services due to flooded caverns and the danger involved. The mine operator expressed concerns that the miners may have perished. The mine, owned by Ural Mining And Metallurgical Company, is one of the largest in the world. Investigations have been opened into safety breaches, with the managing director already under arrest. This incident highlights the ongoing issues of safety standards in Russian mines, where accidents have occurred due to lax enforcement.
