The United Nations has reported that Ukrainian prisoners of war are facing increasingly high numbers of executions by their Russian captors, with 32 POWs being executed in 12 incidents over three months through February. The report highlights widespread torture, ill-treatment, deaths in custody, enforced disappearances, and dire detention conditions. Both Ukrainian and Russian POWs shared testimonies of torture and mistreatment. The report also criticizes Ukraine for allegedly violating International Humanitarian Law by prosecuting individuals for actions compelled by Russian occupation. The UN previously concluded that Russia committed human rights violations and war crimes during the 2022 invasion, including the use of explosives and torture against civilians. The report also cites indiscriminate attacks causing civilian casualties and damage to vital infrastructure.
