Six journalists working for independent media outlets in Russia, including Antonina Favorskaya who covered Alexey Navalny, were arrested within hours of each other. Favorskaya, accused of “extremist activities” due to her Navalny coverage, was one of those detained. The arrests come on the anniversary of American journalist Evan Gershkovich’s imprisonment in Yekaterinburg. Gershkovich, charged with espionage a year ago, denies the accusation. Favorskaya filmed Navalny’s final video and extensively covered his legal proceedings and incarceration. The arrests underscore escalating repression of independent journalism in Russia, as condemned by Reporters Without Borders.
