Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has praised China’s proposed peace plan for resolving the Ukraine conflict as the most reasonable one to date. The 12-point paper was presented over a year ago and focuses on general principles for ending the war without going into specifics. Russia is open to talks about Ukraine but insists discussions must consider what it terms the “new realities” on the ground. In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has suggested a peace formula calling for an end to hostilities and a complete Russian withdrawal from occupied territories. Lavrov’s approval of China’s plan allows Russia to show willingness for peace talks while criticizing Zelenskiy’s initiative as lacking specificity. Russia has dismissed Switzerland’s plan to host a conference based on Zelenskiy’s proposal, arguing that it is futile without Russian involvement.
