Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree for the routine spring conscription campaign, summoning 150,000 citizens for military service. All Russian men are obligated to serve for a year, starting at age 18. The maximum conscription age was raised to 30 from 27, effective January 1, 2024. Compulsory military service in Russia is a sensitive issue, with many men trying to evade conscription. Conscripts are not permitted to engage in combat outside Russia, though some were mistakenly sent to fight in Ukraine in a previous mobilization. Putin previously called up 130,000 individuals for the autumn campaign and 147,000 last spring.
