The House of Lords has inflicted multiple defeats on the government regarding the Rwanda bill, necessitating a delay in its passage into law. Key amendments were approved by the Lords, including considerations for domestic and international laws in the legislation. The bill, designed to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, is part of the government’s strategy to deter dangerous Channel crossings. The bill will now return to the Commons after Easter for further deliberation. Labour’s proposed changes, such as safeguarding laws and exempting individuals who supported UK armed forces from deportation to Rwanda, were also backed by the Lords. The bill’s final wording will be settled through a process known as “ping pong” between the two parliamentary houses. While Downing Street aims to launch the scheme this spring, Labour criticized the government’s readiness and vowed to scrap the plan if they come to power.
