The UN’s State of the Global Climate 2023 report revealed that 2023 was Earth’s hottest year on record, with six other climate change metrics also breaking records. The global average near-surface temperature was 1.45 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial baseline. Additionally, greenhouse gases, ocean heat, and sea level rise reached record highs, while Antarctic sea ice hit a record low, and the Greenland Ice Sheet continued to lose mass. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the urgent need for action as changes accelerate. On a positive note, renewable energy capacity, including solar, wind, and water, reached record levels in 2023, showing promise in the fight against greenhouse gas emissions.
