South Sudan is temporarily closing all schools due to an anticipated extreme heatwave with temperatures reaching 45C (113F). The health and education ministries have instructed parents to ensure children stay indoors during this period. There is uncertainty about how long the school closures will last. The decision has been supported by residents like Peter Garang from the capital, Juba, who suggested equipping schools with air conditioning. South Sudan faces various challenges including civil conflict, drought, and flooding, exacerbating living conditions. The World Food Programme has highlighted the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, attributing it to violence, economic difficulties, climate change, and an influx of refugees from Sudan.
