SpaceX has signed a $1.8 billion contract with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) to create a network of swarming spy satellites. This program, managed under SpaceX’s Starshield unit, aims to have hundreds of Earth-imaging satellites operating in low orbits. The satellites will have the ability to track targets on the ground globally and share information with U.S. intelligence and military officials. The initiative is part of the U.S.’s efforts to enhance its military presence in space and improve surveillance capabilities. The collaboration between SpaceX and NRO highlights the increasing role of private tech companies in classified government projects.
